• 2019 SSDUSA DAR

    From Daryl Stout@TBOLT to ALL on Sat Mar 2 21:21:00 2019
    I received word via email today from Single Square Dancers USA
    (SSDUSA) about their annual Dance-A-Rama (DAR).

    It is held in a different city each Labor Day Weekend (from the
    Thursday night to the Sunday before Labor Day). The Trail-In Dance is on Thursday night, which is a separate admission, payable at the door.
    Square Dancing (Mainstream through A2), Round Dancing (phases II through
    VI), and some Line Dancing, are features throughout the weekend.

    The 2019 DAR will be held at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham -- actually
    The Winfrey Hotel, in nearby Hoover, Alabama...which is next door to the largest mall in Albama. It has over 65 places to eat, so your culinary
    cravings will be easily satisfied. The hotel has Merk's Tavern and
    Kitchen, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, for those who don't wish
    to go off site, as it were.

    You can drive, fly, or take the train (Amtrak) to Birmingham. The Birmingham-Shuttleworth Airport is just 8 miles away, and complimentary
    airport shuttle service is available, but you must make reservations for
    such. The airlines of United, Southwest, Delta, and American serve
    the airport...go to https://flybirmingham.com for details -- then
    contact your individual airline for reservations.

    Also, Amtrak serves Birmingham via The Crescent Passenger Train, with
    one train in each direction daily.

    The southbound train (#19) with arrivals from New York,
    NY...Philadelphia, PA...Washington, DC...Charlottesville, VA (and nearby Richmond)...Charlotte, NC...Clemson, SC...Atlanta, GA...and all
    intermediate points...arrives at 11:50am. The northbound train (#20),
    with arrivals from New Orleans, LA...Meridian, MS...and all intermediate points...arrives daily at 2:15pm.

    Note that if you arrive into New Orleans from a connection with The
    Sunset Limited (Los Angeles, Maricopa (Phoenix), El Paso, San Antonio,
    Houston, Lake Charles)...or The City Of New Orleans (Chicago,
    Champaign-Urbana, Memphis, Jackson), you can NOT connect to another
    train the same day; an overnight stay is required, because of the
    scheduling.

    The Crescent does offer both Coach and Sleeping Car Service (the
    sleeping car space sells out fast), as well as public wi-fi on board.
    Both a Lounge Car (sandwiches, snacks, and beverages throughout the
    day), and Dining Car (breakfast, lunch, and dinner, at selected time),
    are also on board. Most locations on the route (including Birmingham) do
    offer Checked Baggage Service. For Sleeping Car passengers, except for appetizers and alcoholic beverages, the price of their Dining Car meals
    is included in the price of their ticket. Full details are at https://amtrak.com

    The Trail-In Dance will be on Thursday night August 29, with dancing
    on Friday, August 30, Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1,
    2019.

    The squares will be called by:

    * Little Joe Goins (Tennessee)
    * Tom Davis (Ohio)
    * Greg Hatmaker (Tennessee)
    * Gene Aldridge (Tennessee)

    Rounds (and some lines) will be cued by:

    * Robbie Harrington (Tennessee)
    * Diane Martin-Hamilton (Alabama)

    A flier amd registration form is available in the Square And Round
    Dance Files area here on The Thunderbolt BBS, and is available via a
    regular user logon, or anonymous FTP to tbolt.synchro.net -- go to the
    Hobbies and Text file board, look for Square And Round Dance Files, then
    look for the file 2019DAR.PDF -- you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader
    to view and print the file. You can contact Ron Holland (his info is in
    the flier) if you need additional copies of the flier.

    It is requested that a separate form be used for each dancer. Both
    single (non-married (never married, widowed, or divorced)) and married
    couples are welcome. For the married couples, they will register
    individually, and are asked to be willing to dance with someone other
    than their spouse.

    Advance Registration, before August 1, 2019 is $50 per person...after
    August 1, and at the door, registration will be $55 per person. There
    will be a $5 cancellation fee after June 1, 2019, and NO REFUNDS will be
    issued after August 1, 2019. Registration provides a complimentary
    membership to SSDUSA from Sept. 1, 2019 to Sept. 1, 2020.

    Souvenir orders are available with T-Shirts and Polo Shirts. They are
    red with a silkscreen printed gold design, as follows:

    * T-shirts (S, M, L, or XL) $12 each
    * Polo Shirts (M, L, or XL) $22 each
    * Polo Shirts (2XL or 3XK) $24 each

    If you wish to have the T-shirts mailed (you won't make the DAR),
    please add a shipping and handling fee of $3.50 PER ITEM.

    All tour reservations and payments must be received by July 20, 2019.
    No Refunds will be given after July 20, 2019.

    please include a self address postage paid #10 envelope. Send the
    registration form from the flyer to 49th Annual Dance-A-Rama, C/O Susan
    Lee, 819 Pleasantview Drive, Des Moines, IA 50235-2262.

    Further details on lodging, parking and camping, and if you need help reducing accommodation expenses, as well as the planned dance program,
    are all located within the flier noted above.

    Note that proper square dance attire is REQUIRED for all evening
    sessions. For information on that, go to:

    http://www.theassdf.org/attire.htm

    I have added this to the Special Dances listing on the website of the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation, for which I'm the current
    webmaster, and circulation chairman, for the subscriber database for
    their quarterly publication, The Modern Square. The site is http://www.theassdf.org/specials.htm -- just scroll down the page for
    the listing, and the link to the file.

    I myself have not square danced in well over a year, since my local
    club in Little Rock disbanded. But, more importantly, in the last year,
    I've had to place my elderly Mom into a nursing home, set up a Miller
    Trust for all her monetary assets to pay the bill (as Power Of Attorney
    for her), and move back to her home (which, along with her car, and all
    her possessions, have been deeded to me now). Her birthday is that
    weekend, so offhand, I don't know right now, if I'll be able to attend.

    The arthritis is causing me to stiffen up more of late, requiring a
    walker wherever I go. With all the stress of the move back home, and for
    things with my Mom, I've been eating only one meal a day since August,
    and have lost nearly 60 pounds...as well as dropping my Hemoglobin A1C
    from 6.1 to 5.4 -- and all the blood work levels were NORMAL. Some days, though...I don't even get 500 calories...I just don't have the appetite,
    or what foods I eat are low in calories. Flavored water is the beverage
    of choice, which has no calories, and I drink 2 liters of it a day.

    I danced very little when the Dance-A-Rama was in North Little Rock in 2017...and didn't dance at all when it was here in 2007...that was only
    4 months after my late wife's death, and I was still in mourning. Most
    of my work now for the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation (ASSDF) is "behind the scenes", and not on the dance floor itself.

    Besides funding being an issue, I have to worry about personal health concerns (never knowing when I'll have another kidney stone attack),
    home security while being away, bedbugs at hotels, and transportation logistics. I am hoping to get something from the Miller Trust around
    August, but that's not guaranteed. Otherwise, I barely get enough to
    survive and pay the bills each month (barely over $1000 on disability
    doesn't go very far). Right now, I can NOT guarantee that I will attend,
    let alone do any other traveling outside of central Arkansas.
